The Georgetown Neighborhood Library is one of the 26 locations belonging to the District of Columbia Public Library, and since its debut in 1935, it continues to serve as the “pride of the community” in the Georgetown area. Erected on the Georgetown National Register Historic District, the library features the only local history archive in town in its Peabody Room, eponymous with George Peabody, a 19th-century businessman who had gathered and cataloged materials decades before the library’s founding. After a damaging fire in 2007, the library underwent a substantial renovation that both retains its original lineaments and adds thereto children’s and teens’ spaces. Now, the 87-year-long library connects the past and present of the Georgetown neighborhood and presents them to locals and visitors alike.

What is the DC art world? Despite having some of the world’s best museums (and several new ones appearing), its own diverse collector base, an active community of artists working in all media, and an art historical context of its own, DC is still not considered one of the primary “art cities” in the country. Todd von Ammon (who opened a contemporary art gallery in Georgetown just a few years ago, which remains the only one of its kind) will moderate a discussion between collectors, curators and artists of the district and attempt to answer the question “What is the DC
art world?”.

In recent years, Georgetown’s St. John Church has renovated many of its historic functions and added modern spaces, including a new preschool on the second floor. Just as its physical cornerstone has remained intact for more than two centuries, St. John emphasizes the interaction between religion and the secular community, providing all kinds of services to visitors with help from a substantial horde of volunteers. As a local church, St. John’s regularly hosts events for Christians and non-Christians alike, bringing to the Georgetown riverfront a sense of togetherness and mutual support.

Open From 6:00 - 10:30 pm
PROMOTION
Join us for the Opening Reception of the exhibition "Mary Kelly: To Witness The Future." Light refreshments will be served from 6:00 - 8:00pm.
Mary Kelly (American b. 1941, lives Los Angeles, CA) has influenced conceptual and feminist art practices and shaped the way art is taught for decades. This exhibition is the first to specifically explore her long engagement with political movements. The works on view here were produced between 2005 and 2020, but they reference the responses of women and women-aligned activists to key issues of equal rights in the United States and Europe since the 1960s. With a range of collaborators, methods, and materials — including live happenings and household dryer lint — she has mined historical archives to examine not only recurring themes of gender discrimination, racism, nuclear war, and the climate crisis, but also the forms of resistance they have generated.
This exhibition supported by Helaine Posner (C ’75)
Curated by Al Miner.

Also enjoy an exhibit from Dr. Jaya Viswanathan, a neuroscientist and artist passionate about understanding how the brain works. In this series of paintings, she endeavors to provide a unique window into the complexity and beauty of brains via artistic interpretations of various sensory systems. These span the traditional 5 (historically considered as the 5 human senses of seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling physical stimuli, and tasting), internal sensory systems that help animals maintain stability, to more exotic systems such as those that enable animals to sense electrical and magnetic fields, see polarized light, or thermally image their environment. The sensory abilities depicted in her paintings range the entire animal kingdom and illustrate the world of neuroscience normally only accessible through a microscope to neuroscientists, or in technical scientific articles and textbooks. Through her art she aims to raise social awareness and appreciation of diversity in nature.
